In the production of box-type packaging products, color restoration problems often occur, such as neutral gray color deviation, which in turn affects product quality. In addition to problems with the equipment itself and the skill level of production personnel, the key issue is that enterprises have not carried out effective color management and reasonable use of oils and inks.

Color management is about managing people's perception of color. The purpose of color management is to complete the conversion of color differences throughout the entire process of image reproduction, so as to ensure that the image color appearance from input display to output matches as closely as possible, ultimately achieving consistency between the color of the original and the color of the copy.

Image reproduction needs to go through stages such as image acquisition, processing, color separation, and printing. According to the principles of color rendering, at each stage, colors are displayed according to their presentation characteristics and features. Different scanning and display devices will display different colors for the same original. In addition, due to the lack of consistency between RGB three-color displays and four-color inks, there is a lack of consistency when converting RGB data to CMYK, and printed materials obtained using different papers and inks are also different. Therefore, it is necessary to control the color restoration of various devices and media in the production system through color management.

Setting the color profile of equipment is an intermediate link in color management. The profile contains the representative color characteristics of each device, such as chromaticity characteristic curves and input excellent gamut characteristic curves. The color management system uses these representative color characteristics to complete the matching and conversion of color spaces among various devices.

Color management must follow a series of proper operating procedures to achieve the expected results. Color management can be divided into three methods, called "3C", namely calibration, characterization, and conversion.

Calibration: In order to ensure the constancy, reliability, and sustainability of the color information transmission process, input, display, and output devices need to be calibrated to ensure that they are in a standard state of operation. Input calibration includes calibration of scanner brightness, contrast, noise field, etc., to ensure that the same image data can be obtained no matter when scanning a manuscript.

By setting the brightness, contrast, color temperature, and gamma value of the entire display system, colors can be displayed accurately. Output calibration includes calibration of printers, imagesetters, printers, and proofing machines. After calibrating their characteristics, devices can output according to standard characteristics when leaving the factory.
